Cain and Abel at Work: How to Overcome Office Politics and the People Who Stand Between You and Success
Published in Hardcover by Broadway Books (13 March, 2001)
Authors: Gerry Lange and Todd Domke
Average review score:

Little practical advice
This book just tell you that there are some nasty people around but provide very little insight on how those people should be dealt with.

Mandatory reading
Do you like to try hard when you go to work? Do you want every project be better than the last? Do you feel good about yourself if you can make things easier or smoother for someone else? All without really wanting anything in return but maybe a smile and a wave?
Is someone lying to, or about you, undermining you, or taking credit for your efforts, all to improve their perceived lot in the company? Is this person taking away your desire to do your best or go the extra mile?
If you can answer yes to _any_ of these questions you owe it to yourself to read this book. It doesn't offer much in the way to get around the situation, but knowing what your up against can help you pick a course before you become roadkill.

Managers -- do your employees a favor and read this book!
Ever since my first job at a small startup company I've been looking for a book like this. At my first job there was a Cain. While he was not directly responsible for this company going out of business, he certainly contributed to its demise. All the other books that I've read since then stressed various things: better communication techniques; handling difficult personalities, promoting one self, using humor to get a point across, and the like. The problem with these books is they all assume that the problem person is well intentioned -- and this is the major flaw in these other books. This book is the first self help book I've ever come across that was willing to admit that unscrupulous people exist.

Lange and Domke's book addresses the problem of how to recognize a Cain. This characterization is important to us Able's, but the downside is that this book can be used as a guide for Cain's-in-training (alas, "it is a poor sword that does not cut both ways"). Sadly, the usefulness of this book to Able's is directly proportional to how useful it is to Cain's-in-training at becoming better Cain's.

The only thing I don't like is that in a lot of the examples, the Able's are forced to leave the company by the Cain's. Because of these examples, I can see the necessity of recommending that Able's 1) "don't corner a Cain" 2) avoid interacting with a Cain (the authors don't say this specifically, but it comes across in the examples and the remedies). I would have preferred more direct methods for dealing with a Cain instead of hoping that all managers read this book and additionally hoping that it is not to the manager's benefit to keep a Cain around. The authors take the high road in dealing with Cain's. I suppose direct methods would involve becoming Cain-like myself and I'd rather eat glass shards than become a Cain. Maybe somebody can come out with a book describing how Able's can triumph over Cain's instead of merely existing in their shadows.

Regardless, this is an excellent book. And when it comes out in paperback, I plan on buying a half dozen copies and giving them to every manager I know.

Beginning Dreamweaver MX
Published in Paperback by Wrox (February, 2003)
Authors: Charles Brown, Imar Spaanjaars, and Todd Marks
Average review score:

Not the same quality as other WROX publications
I purchased 3 WROX books in the past this with good success. I expected the same thoroughness, but unfortunately, couldn't find it in this one.

As a somewhat seasoned developer using both Visual Studio and GoLive on our Corporate Intranet, I only needed to acquire familiarity with the features within Dreamweaver for my own personal use.

I enjoyed the overview and first few chapters in this book, and soon began to appreciate the potential this book might have. At the end of chapter two, I compared my project with the illustration in the book. They didn't look the same. I was determined to find out why, so I compared my code with the downloaded code. They were different. I rechecked the steps in the book looking for the missed steps, but didn't see it.

If you want to learn Dreamweaver MX, and don't mind checking your code with the downloaded code, then this book might work for you. For me, I'll look elsewhere.

Excellent!! Only if you are serious about learning
First I thought this book over explains everything. When I started encountering territories that I'm not familiar with, I started to greatly appreciate the author's method of teaching. This book teaches you by getting you working on real projects from scratch. While you are following the step by step instructions, the author explains the science and whys of these instructions. The only drawback of this book is that project 1 seems to be tested only on Internet Explorer. I tried the files with Netscape 4.79 and 6.2 they both showed some flows that took me hours to figure out how to fix. Also I had to use a behavior extension to recover the mess, in Netscape, made by adding layers. Apart from that all my projects have worked perfectly. The second part is code intensive which I really appreciate. This book will show what's going on behind the scenes. Therefore you won't be limited by what Dreamweaver can offer. It will show you the way to go beyond Dreamweaver's ability. This is not a "for dummies" type of book. You have to follow the instructions very carefully. All the mistakes in this project turned out to be mine. For the effort made to write this book I cannot give less than five stars. I wouldn't hesitate to buy Professional Dreamweaver MX if it exists.

Awesome book
I found this book to be one of my most prized reference books. It takes you through the building of three different sites. You are gradually introduced to ASP and JavaScript.

If you are serious about web design, and have found FrontPage to bee too limiting, this is the book to get you going!

Help! I'm trapped in obedience school
By Carson

I read, help! I'm trapped in obedience school. It's written by Todd strasser, and the genre is fiction. He also wrote all the other, help I'm trapped in' books (he wrote the whole series). The plot is that, a boy named Andy, switches bodies with Jake's dog, lance (Jake is the main character), and the things they go through at home, school and on the streets.
Andy is gross because he shoots spitballs through his nose. He's stubborn because he doesn't want to turn back into a human because as a dog he gets to be lazy and not wash.
This book is funny because Jake keeps trying to talk to Andy. This makes every one stare at him (they don't know that Andy is in lance) that happens on page 48, in obedience school.
Jake and Josh some times walk over to Andy's house, I walk over to my friend's houses all the time. Jake has a pet and so do i. Jake has a dog, I have reptiles.
Jake is a good kid (he's not a troublemaker) because he doesn't give people answers in school, and he doesn't like it when his friends make fun of his sister. He's persistent because he keeps trying to get Andy into his own body even after Andy doesn't want to, and he's been made fool of, he even makes up excuses to get Andy into his old body.
Then as soon as Jessica (Jake's older sister) says "its time to get groomed" then suddenly Andy doesn't want to be a dog any more. After that they sneak into Dirksons (dirkson is the science professor) garage so they could use the d.i.t.s. To switch Andy back to'well Andy. There's only one problem' well you have to find out for your self.

Can you guess what happened?

The best dog book ever! January 22,2003
This book by Todd Strasser is the best dog book I have ever read. In this book, Jake, Andy (Jake's best friend), and Lance (Jake's dog) go into Mr.Dirkson's (Jake and Andy's science teacher) garage. Then Jake presses a button and makes Andy and Lance switch bodies. I'm not going to tell you anymore or else I would spoil it for you. Good-Bye!

Not as good as Todd's other books, this book takes great recipes and makes light, low-fat recipes out of 'em. get the other books first -THEY are GREAT!

I'm just glad that this book exists!
I am a junk-food addict, I admit it. What makes this book so great is that it allows me to satisfy those junk food cravings and still eat low fat. I have some of Mr. Wilbur's books and look forward to getting the other low-fat one. I am so glad to find that most of the ingredients used to reduce the fat are readily accessible.

Closet: A Todd Mills Mystery
Published in Paperback by Delta (November, 1998)
Author: R. D. Zimmerman
Average review score:

'Closet' helpd me out of mine
I first read this book when I was 95% sure of my sexuality and trying to muster the courage to come out. It was also my first gay novel. This story of a recently outed gay man who is accused of murder gave me my first tiny clues as to what gay life is and how the coming out experience can be handled. Strange, huh? Who'da thunk it? Nevertheless, it made a real impression on me and I hold this book in special place becasue of it.

The story is engaing, quickly paced and full of suspence as well as the intcracies of coming out in very public and private ways. I'll always remember the secret meeting that opens the novel as one of the most suspensful things I've read (probaly due to it's gay context and my state of mind at the time). Zimmerman keeps the mystery itslef engaging and quite difficult to solve. Although I was focused on other aspects of the story :) I was kept gussing who the murderer could be until the very end.

If you're a fan of the series, you have to read this to see how it all started and if not, well this is a perfect time to get hooked. I give it 4 four stars because my state of mind when first reading it has clouded my critical eye a bit. But no matter, you are in store for a treat, in so many respects.

Good Intro to a Great Series
Although this is the first novel in Zimmerman's Todd Mills Mystery Series, it's the last one I've read. And I must admit that it was wonderful to finally get the introduction to many of the issues Zimmerman brings into the later novels. If you're a fan of "Outburst", "Innuendo" and others, I highly recommend you trying to find a copy of "Closet". It will be worth the effort.

Todd Mills is at the pinnacle of his career; he is in negotiations for a major promotion at Channel 7 News. The only problem is the stress in his relationship with his 4-year lover, Michael. You see, Todd is not "out," and has always done his best to keep his professional and private lives as separate as he can. Michael, however, gave him an ultimatum: me or the closet. After a lively fight, and a short time to think about his priorities, Todd decides to choose Michael. But he's too late . . . Michael has been killed. Todd is implicated in the murder, outed to the world, and forced to deal with many thoughts and feelings he's never had before.

In my opinion, Zimmerman's keeping the killer's identity hidden until the last few pages is wonderful. Even though I know that all the leads, twists and hints in the novel are meant to mislead me, I always fall for them, and am quite suprised at the end. The key to these books is to suspect everyone and no one.

Just as interesting is the struggle Todd faces with being blasted out of the closet all at once. Years of fearing that people will shun and hate him for who he is, the impact on his career, and not fitting into the gay community come to the surface. Not all the questions and issues are answered, but I believe Zimmerman was true to the struggle being faced, and how people learn to lean on their friends and family to help them through it.

This is a wonderful book from a wonderful series. Read them one and all.

Compelling from the start...
The Todd Mills series has been a joy to discover, this is the first book in the series. Zimmerman likes to grab you from the very beginning and keep you wondering throughout. I'm normally one to figure out Hollywood plots in moments and then am disappointed as my suspicions are confirmed ... Zimmerman has a few twists and turns that, joyfully, keep me guessing. Try it!

Swim, Bike, Run

The gospel when it first hit press; outdated now
This was the first book I owned on the subject and could not believe the amount of training that the authors recommended one need do to finishi a triathlon. Given that the book is a bit old, I believe that these recommendations are a sign of those times. Nowadays, people know that one can do very well at the sport of triathlon on significantly less training, and I point the interested reader in the direction of books such as "Time-saving ..." and Sleamaker's "SERIOUS Training...". These books are equally scientific, but do not put as much emphasis on having to cover so many miles, but rather inform you on how to spend whatever time you actually have to train.

I would not recommend this book to a newcomer, nor to a seasoned triathlete anymore, but a few years ago I might have...

Great for beginners
This is a good book for everyone thinking about triathlons. It offers good advice on choosing equipment, techniques and training programs.
Instead of relying on distance, its programs focus on time and percentage. Since biking encompasses usually 50% of the race, training should focus 50% on biking (unless you're very weak in one of the other legs).

It offers sample worksheets to set up your own program, based on the type of triathlon-sprint to Ironman.

it works
I'm a new transition to triathlons. This book works well for me because I'm prepared to accept the information the book has to offer. The information is objective and the training methods presented appear well organized with technical reasoning backing up the new concepts I learned here. I feel the author is genuinely concerned about the readers success and therefore disagree with other reviewers comments' that the there is too much (unnecessary) training. My thoughts on this matter are that Triathletes need a sufficient amount of training to efficiently compete and I think once again the author backs up the reasons why the training is important . My interpretation of the general training outline presented is that this will prepare one well for the stresses of half ironman competition, but one can adjust up or down from there to suit their racing needs. For a 1994 copyright, this book is well worth the money because the facts, figures, and methods being used appear to be genuine by even today's standards. If you wish to find something exactly for you please visit your local full service health club and pay several hundred dollars for a genuine taylored plan, this is a serious statement for those being extremely serious about this sport. But for the novice like me, this book tells me everything I need to know at this point. See you on the course friends...

The Sixties: Years of Hope Days of Rage
Published in Paperback by Bantam Books (August, 1993)
Author: Todd Gitlin
Average review score:

needs perspective
One review says this book is "Part critical history, part personal memoir, part celebration, and part meditation." This is accurate - though some parts are larger than others. The critical history is very interesting - but the personal memoir, which dominates the book, is not. Gitlin has a lot of interesting and incisive things to say, but he dwells far too much on boring minutiae like who Tom Hayden's girlfriend was in different months.

in lieu of history, a personal view of the 60s
This is one of the better books available on the 1960s and what they meant. Gitlin, formerly high in the SDS organization, was an actor as the drama unfolded. The sections related to his memories are exceptional, as are certain portions in subjects such as the black panthers. Unfortunately, his assessment as a whole was a bit thin for me, kind of like an appetizer rather than the decisive feast I had hoped for. Maybe, because the 1960s are still at the center of the US political debate whether we admit it or not, it is too early to tell all the stories together, definitively, as has been done of the 1950s by Halberstam. Because I remember most of the events he treats, I was hoping for a more comprehensive treatment of them so that I could put my feelings in perspective.

As a liberal, Gitlin's views are clear. While I am more conservative than he, I empathise with where he was coming from. For me, as a high school student, the 60s were the ideal carnival: why not ditch school to protest war? I feared being drafted, escaped it by a nose when the war ended, and wanted to relive this from a different pint of view. It wasn't available in this book.

Recommended, but not great.

Brilliant Account of 60's Student Movement
A rare constellation of virtues made it hard to put down this riveting volume. First of all, Gitlin is a superb writer. His language often reaches a literary quality, he has a novelist's eye for detail, an investigative journalist's command of the relevant information, and a story-teller's ability with narrative. That Gitlin is an academic sociologist shows through in his capable analyses of social forces. His description of the dynamics of escalation in the student movement's activities together with its own self-understanding is especially enlightening. His account is also impressively fair-minded. Because he cared so much about achieving the goals of the student movement, Gitlin describes what was thought and done both sympathetically and critically. These and other reasons make the book well worth reading for anyone interested in U.S. culture. But for those of us who were involved in the campus struggles against the war in Nicaragua or against investment in apartheid South Africa in the '80's or, indeed, in any such campaigns since, this book creates a debt of gratitude.

Disappointed!
I studied sybex ccna book for my ccna exam. It was amazing. I scored 935 without taking a course etc. Just 2 weeks of study with that book, boson router sim and boson exams. So I bought this set to study for those ccnp exams. I read the routing book first and tried some boson exams in order to evaluate myself. I was awful! and I assure you that was not my fault!

I could not efford to buy another book about routing so I switched to the switching exam. And I wasted 2-3 weeks with that book too!! At first, that book seems to be satisfactory but if you read the exam topics on cisco web site, you will see that some of them are not even mentioned in that book.

Today, I am going to start reading a cisco press book for that switching exam. I suggest you do the same and save money!

Great book for CCNP
Excellent book for exam and subject review. It covers the objectives for each exam in detail independently for each of the exams in CCNP. Practice questions, excellent examples, and lucid laguage are the best qualities of the book set. I gave four stars, as this set covers only objectives for the certification, but not for real life indepth touch of hte subject matter. Cisco Press books do an excellent job for these qualities. But, Lammle rocks as usual for "to the point" approach. Good Job! Keep it up! And, Good luck to all of you'll going for the certification!

MCSE Test Success: NT Workstation 4
Published in Paperback by Sybex (March, 1998)
Authors: Todd Lammle, Lisa Donald, Lisa Donald, and Rodney Fournier
Average review score:

A good book crippled by bad editing.
This book was very hard to get through simply because of the editing errors. The test questions are useless because the answer keys are mismatched. Lammle has written some good books, and his teaching style is very effective. However, I have to recommend anyone looking to cram for the Workstation exam skip this book.

Good book - watch the errors
I found this book very helpful in passing the NT Workstation exam. The practice questions were good, and many of the exam questions appeared on my actual test. Be sure to visit the Sybex Web site for errata, though. There were more errors than I like to see, but the errata covered the major ones. All things said, I recommend this book.

Informative, but has several errors in technical content.
I found this book easy to read and liked the test questions. I did find several errors that could mislead someone with no experience with the product. Overall, I would give it a good rating.

Sinus Survival: The Holistic Medical Treatment for Sinusitis, Allergies, and Colds
Published in Paperback by Putnam Pub Group (Paper) (31 August, 2000)
Authors: Robert S. Ivker and Todd H. Nelson
Average review score:

This guy's a real flake
This book starts out with about 100 pages of legitimate information concerning sinuses, symptoms of sinusitis and other sinus ailments, and the current medical understanding of allergies and many other causes of sinus problems. This material is informative although similar information is available at public web sites as well.
But the remainder of the book is a random walk through what the author terms "holistic" approaches. These include such topics as having too much yeast in your diet, getting psychotherapy, having a stronger sense of humor, celebrating a day of Sabbath, and so forth. Some of these might be good suggestions for various individuals, but if you want to learn about these things, get some other book. The book doesn't relate these things to sinus problems in any case.

I'm off the antibiotic merry-go-round!
Sinus Survival has helped me enormously, especially in terms of learning about the yeast connection, the need for saline irrigation, and steaming of the sinuses. Since being treated for yeast overgrowth, my sinuses, as well as a whole host of other needling symptoms, have greatly improved. Even my new ENT is very familiar with the book. By the way, I did need sinus surgery after all due to an obstruction in one of my sinuses. The best thing about Sinus Survival is that I was able to try many techniques for improving my sinuses and breaking the cycle of sickness. I may still occasionally need my ENT, but I don't have that hopeless feeling that I had for many years when all I received was a prescription for antibiotics.

Better than surgery
Bought this book last week. After six months of not being able to smell or taste, and having ears plugging up, I am feeling a bit better. I have intermittent episodes of smelling/tasting in only a week. Yes, I have done acupuncture, chinese herbs and naturopathy. My energy level is up a couple of notches (thanks, kukicha tea), I can sorta keep up with my babies. For me the candida/fungus link is absolutely there. So just following the diet and taking some supplements is a start to getting better!! YEAH!
p.s. I did find a positive "I AM" getting better attitude helps.
